We remember the days when CrossFit was so underground, it was hardly on the radar let alone gracing the pages of an institution like TIME. And now that the “CrossFit is so dangerous” coverage has been completely PLAYED OUT, popular pubs are thinking about the WHYs behind the regular man’s love for intensity. Click here to read TIME’s take.
My theory on why people love CrossFit is simple. Remember how much you loved recess? You never thought about why you loved it, you just tore out the door for 45 minutes of red-faced running, climbing, throwing and jumping. You returned back to your desk, ready to learn. Once the need for movement was satisfied, your brain was ready to rock. People NEED to move.
Sometime in middle school we lost recess and simply stayed in the desk. Some of my clients have been in that desk for 20, 30 and even 40 years. After one week of Foundations, they are sore and confused, yet completely in love with CrossFit. Often I hear, “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and I don’t know why I love it, but I do!”
I live for welcoming people back to recess. In my box they find their game, and they can choose to play it however they want. As long as they play it safely, fine by me.
Many are so busy driving their kids to practice and watching them play sport, they leave themselves off the list. We preach to our children about working hard and being GAME READY, but if we aren’t training for the game of life, why should they listen to us? Kids will always follow examples over advice.
